Lesson 10
Dear Teni,
Thank you for your tenth message. My comments and corrections follow.
Sincerely,
Prof. Sue Garreis
Dear Prof. Susan Garreis
Hello
Thank you for your reply and your corrections.
Long time, no see" is a wonderful slang phrase. Since we practice slang and more complex English, that is an acceptable greeting after our absence. Of course, you know that in more formal communications something like "It's been a long time since we last talked" is more appropriate.
-> Thank you for fixing the slang phrase. I've learned a new word.
I also have friend who is a computer programmer. He taught me a lot about programming.
-> I also have several friends who are computer programmers. They taught me the keywords of a programming language. Thus I search on the internet and do self-study.
Oh, heavens! 3-D touch screens! I can't even imagine! I am still amazed by 3-D printers and their use in medical science and surgery to print implants for use in humans. Here's a link about some of the developments in 3-D printing for medicine:
http://www.livescience.com/26853-3d-printing-medicine.html. It is a slide show, so just click on the "next" button. The English may be complex. To get an idea of what is happening, just read the large text as you go from slide to slide.
-> I also think it's very paranoid, like in the science fiction film. If 3-D projection technology is perfected and applied to medicine, I think people will raise the average lifespan to 150 years old.
Thank you for your link.
> Would you like to live to be one hundred fifty years old if you were in good physical and mental health?
I don't know that I would. However, I would like to make it to one hundred in good physical and mental health. We'll see what's in the plan for me.
What did you do this summer? Did you have a chance to go home?
-> I did not return home. I spent a lot of time to do part-time job and study.
I think you are one who loves working and so do I.
My part-time job is being a waiter in Chinese restaurants. I've learned lots about China from language to traditions. Chinese traditions are similar to those of my country.
> Is Chinese food popular in Japan? What about Vietnamese food? Thai food? All three are popular in the U.S., but Chinese is the most popular. What is your favorite Chinese food?
Fall (autumn) begins on Tuesday, September 23, in the U.S. The weather has already turned cooler. It is about twenty-five degrees Celsius in the daytime and fifteen degrees Celsius in the night. I love it! The leaves have not yet begun to change color. With the cooler weather, though, that will happen soon.
-> I love autumn in Japan. The weather is cool and pleasant.
Where I was born there is only sun and rain, irrespective of the four seasons in Japan or the USA.
> Where I am (mid-Atlantic region) there are four well-defined seasons. In other parts of the country the Spring and Fall seasons are less well-defined. It would be hard for me to live where there is only sun and rain. How hot does it get in your part of Vietnam in the summer?
With best wishes
Nguyen Hung Thien

Once again I am at my daughter's house for the weekend. I came up for my grandson's soccer game on Saturday morning. After the game I spent a few hours with my grandson, Sean, my granddaughter, Emma, and my son, Alex (their father). We went to a local restaurant. Here's a link to Jake's: http://waybackburgers.com/. I think their hamburgers are delicious. It is not healthy to eat that food all the time, but we do it as a treat sometimes. The healthy food is not very quick to order and eat.
Today is Sunday. This afternoon my daughter and I will work on her garden a little bit. She wants some flowers that will have almost no maintenance. She works long hours and has little time and energy for gardening. I brought a few daylilies from my house. They will spread each year. That means we plant a few this year and next year there are more. Attached is a picture of the orange lilies. I hope that Sean and Emma can come over to help.
I will return to Maryland tonight. It's back to work on Monday.
The new lesson is attached. There are two files. #10A is a review of the first half of the course. #10B is a summary of my summer vacation.
